"Long have I loved my many Apple Computer PowerMac and PowerBook. I've used a Mac about as long as there has been a Mac. This went on for two years until I got my very own BlackBerry 7230. For me the time had come to break the Palm habit. But there was one significant problem: BlackBerries don't talk to the Mac.

But finally there is a program that gets the Mac and the BlackBerry together. It's called PocketMac BlackBerry, and it comes from the folks who created the first software to let Microsoft's Pocket PCs to talk to Macs.

At the outset I should say I like this program...

It also works with Now Contact and Now Up-To-Date, though I didn't try it with those applications.

One feature I liked was the syncing of "notes" from the BlackBerry to the Mac. I use this mostly to take down phone numbers or new addresses when I meet people. I like how PocketMac syncs the notes with the Mac application Stickies, which emulates the behavior of paper Post-It notes. When you write a note on the BlackBerry, it pops up directly on your Mac desktop in Stickies, where you can decide what to do with the information right away so it's not forgotten.

PocketMac BlackBerry sells for $30 and can be downloaded from PocketMac.com. It supports nearly every BlackBerry device going back to the 957--some older models require a special serial port attachment--as well as the newest phone-like handhelds such as the 7100t. I have no problem recommending it"

"BlackBerrys and Apples make a great fruit salad. But until now, they haven't made for great PIM connectivity. With PocketMac For BlackBerry, PocketMac sweetens the Mac/Berry relationship, allowing syncing of address book, calendar, notes, and task data from OS X's own built-in PIM applications, Microsoft Entourage, or Now Contacts/Up-To-Date.

PocketMac For BlackBerry works, and that's going to be enough for most people. We synced contacts, calendars, tasks, and notes with Entourage 2004 quickly and easily, both through iSync and through PocketMac's own application.

"Carrying around both a PDA and an iPod can make for an unwieldy package, but you can lighten your load with PocketMac iPod Edition, which enables your iPod to do double duty. This handy program lets you transport and view important info while you're out of the office, but you still won't be able to use the iPod to answer e-mail or add to documents.

Once installed, the program is fairly effortless to use. On Windows machines, PocketMac starts up every time you connect your iPod, and it lets you sync Microsoft Outlook contacts, calendars, unread e-mail, tasks, text notes, and Word documents. On Macs, it works as a plug-in for iSync so that you can sync all the items listed above, as well as stickies and Adobe Acrobat docs.

"Installation of PocketMac was quick and easy...

I was able to go through the initial installation and use many of the main features without looking at the manual. 

I was quite satisfied with PocketMac's ability to sync my Entourage data fast. The first time I synched my 950 contacts, the process took about 2 minutes. Synching the calendar also went smoothly.

I especially liked PocketMac's Web synching capability. It includes PocketMac Mobile Web, which is analogous to Mobile Favorites in Windows.

I also tried Avantgo and was impressed with that service. I can see why it's so popular and am now happy to be able to access it on the Pocket PC from my Mac. 

One neat option of PocketMac is its ability to designate a Flash memory card as the location for synching where possible, such as putting photos on the card instead of into main memory.

"The interesting design of PocketMac is something that is worth talking about. Instead of implementing a seamless one-click-no-options  zero-configuration system, similar to other programs for Mac, PocketMac provides an experience that is much more similar to Microsoft's ActiveSync. 

PocketMac is so good Microsoft should buy it and re-brand it as ActiveSync for Mac. Really, it's that good. 

Before PocketMac, I would tell Mac users to have some form of Virtual PC or some old PC laying around if they wanted to own a Pocket PC, but PocketMac handles just about every situation that you would need a PC to fix or handle or install something. The best part is, they let you try it before you buy."

"...the release of PocketMac 3.0 should have Mac fans taking a hard look at Pocket PC 2003-based or Smartphone-based models the next time they purchase a handheld. 

One of the joys of PocketMac is how well it works with standard Mac applications. During installation, it adds a folder to your default web browser bookmark list, where you can save web pages that you want synched later. 

And Mac users who are allergic to anything Windows will love the optional theme which gives the Pocket PC interface a Mac OS look."

"PocketMac 3, which began life as a shareware-like product we originally covered in our "Mobile Mayhem" feature (pages 28-37, June 2003), looks and functions more like Apple iSync. That's good news for Mac users who happen to prefer the PocketPC platform over the more Mac-friendly Palm OS. 

PocketMac 3 provides several new features. Chief among them is an ever-growing list of compatible device drivers, providing support for about 20 different PPCs. PocketMac now supports Bluetooth in addition to USB and Airport wireless connections. The upgrade is much more aware of all the different methods people use to keep their lives organized. Sync support for Microsoft Entourage, just about any Apple iLife application and even a couple of third-party information managers (such as Now Contact) make the product much more useful. 

We liked opening Pocket Word and Pocket Excel documents directly on our Mac, editing them and saving them back to the Pocket PC without moving the files back and forth. PocketMac 3 is a real time-saver, which is especially important to those of us who carry way too many mobile devices around and still want to sync them up with our Macs. PocketMac does make life easier..."

"Setting up PocketMac Pro is fairly simple. Install the software on your Mac and then set the preferences, which let you choose the particular Mac program you will be synchronizing with. 

...synchronizing data went well for me.

...I had no trouble synching my 900 contacts. 

...the PocketMac team has put a lot of time into it [PocketMac Pro], and even though they're a small company they try hard to offer good technical support.
